Luxury Wet Room Conversion in The Woodlands

Luxury Wet Room Conversion – Sterling Ridge, The Woodlands

Project Overview: This Sterling Ridge master bathroom transformation showcases the pinnacle of modern bathroom design. Our clients, a professional couple planning to age in place, wanted a spa-like retreat that combined luxury with accessibility. The result: a stunning 120-square-foot wet room featuring a curbless shower, freestanding soaking tub, and floating double vanity.

Completed wet room with linear drain and freestanding tub in The Woodlands home
The completed wet room features Italian porcelain, matte black fixtures, and a Japanese soaking tub

The Challenge

The original 1998 bathroom suffered from typical builder-grade limitations: a corner jetted tub that was rarely used, a cramped shower stall with dated gold fixtures, inefficient storage in the vanity area, and poor lighting that made the space feel smaller. The homeowners wanted to modernize while ensuring the space would serve them well into retirement.

Our Solution

Design Phase

Working with the clients’ vision of a “modern spa meets accessibility,” we developed a design that removed all barriers while maximizing luxury. The centerpiece: a true wet room with waterproofing from floor to ceiling, allowing water to flow freely throughout the space.

  • Layout optimization: Removed the dividing wall between toilet and shower areas
  • Drainage system: Installed a 48-inch linear drain with custom slope
  • Waterproofing: Full Schluter KERDI membrane system
  • Accessibility: Zero-threshold entry with slip-resistant tile

Material Selection

Every material was chosen for both beauty and performance in a wet environment:

Element Material Supplier
Floor Tile 24×48 Italian Porcelain (Calacatta look) The Tile Shop
Wall Tile 12×24 Matching Porcelain The Tile Shop
Vanity Custom White Oak Floating Marvel Works Shop
Countertop Caesarstone Calacatta Nuvo Houston Granite
Fixtures Matte Black Kohler Purist Series Ferguson
Tub 67″ Freestanding Acrylic Signature Hardware

Construction Process

Week 1: Demolition & Prep

Careful demolition preserved the adjoining bedroom walls while completely gutting the bathroom. We discovered and resolved hidden water damage in the subfloor, reinforcing the entire area for the heavy soaking tub.

Week 2: Plumbing & Electrical

Relocated plumbing to accommodate the new layout, including floor-mounted tub filler, rain shower head with separate body sprays, and wall-mounted vanity faucets. Electrical upgrades included LED recessed lighting on dimmers, heated floor system wiring, and GFCI protection throughout.

Week 3: Waterproofing & Tile Prep

The critical phase: creating a completely waterproof envelope. Applied self-leveling compound to achieve perfect 2% slope, installed KERDI membrane on all surfaces, performed 24-hour flood test (passed perfectly), and prepped for large-format tile installation.

Week 4: Tile Installation

Our master tile setter spent four days achieving perfection with large-format tiles requiring precise leveling, minimal grout lines for easy maintenance, and perfectly aligned linear drain integration. The result: seamless surfaces that appear to float.

Week 5: Finishing Touches

Installation of all fixtures and final details, including the custom white oak vanity with soft-close drawers, frameless glass panel (minimal hardware for clean look), Japanese-style soaking tub positioning, and final sealing and waterproofing verification.

Special Features

  • Heated floors: Schluter DITRA-HEAT system keeps tile warm year-round
  • Smart controls: Digital thermostatic valve prevents scalding
  • LED lighting: Color-temperature adjustable for day/night modes
  • Built-in niche: Waterproofed storage with accent tile backing
  • Bench seating: Floating teak bench for comfort and storage
